Ovation LIMS Supports Monkeypox Virus Testing

Here at Ovation, we’re closely following the evolving monkeypox virus outbreak. Over the past few months, we’ve engaged with a number of independent clinical labs that have started testing for monkeypox virus in response to rising concerns about a lack of testing that closely resembles the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. These concerns were further cemented on September 7th with the HHS authorization of emergency use of in vitro diagnostics for detection and/or diagnosis of monkeypox virus. Our team has worked hard to ensure that we have a solution in place for these labs who are helping to slow the spread by quickly increasing the availability of tests.

We’re proud to announce that Ovation LIMS supports monkeypox virus testing workflows and patient reporting. Building on the millions of infectious disease tests that have been performed through Ovation LIMS, we’ve created and tested standardized workflows, interpretation rules, and patient report templates to support various approaches to monkeypox virus testing.

Patient reports are configurable, but an example report (detected) can be found here.

Can results be communicated directly to patients?
Yes, results can be securely made available directly to patients through Ovation or one of our patient portal partner integrations. Ovation LIMS can also securely deliver results directly to providers via online portal with email notification or EHR integration. 

How is public health reporting handled?
Official guidance from the CDC states that any laboratory performing monkeypox virus diagnostic testing should report test results to state and jurisdictional health departments. Ovation LIMS offers an Infectious Disease Analytics Report that your lab can quickly download to access the information you need to send to any applicable health departments. This report contains all the data elements the CDC recommends including when reporting results to state and jurisdictional health departments.

Can test requisitions be customized to include information that the CDC strongly encourages clinical labs to obtain?
Yes, requisitions in Ovation LIMS can be customized to include all the information the CDC encourages collecting, such as complete patient contact information, demographic data, clinical history, and information about the specimen. Interfaces with EHRs and other ordering systems can be quickly updated to ensure the necessary information is entered into Ovation LIMS successfully.
